Damage Claims

If you’ve had any experience in shipping, you know that sometimes items get damaged in transit.  There are a few reasons for this.

First, the carriers are moving literally missions of packages each day.  In order to accomplish that, they use high speed conveyor belts and lots of technology.  Bottom line, the shipping system is not a kind environment.  Our test is always, will the package withstand a drop of eight feet off a conveyor belt onto a concrete floor?

Occasionally, accidents happen.  We’ve seen boxes with tire tracks on them, holes punched in the side, etc.  – that shouldn’t happen!

By far, however, the number one cause of damage in transit is inadequate packing.  Packages are thrown around, fall off those conveyors, get kicked, knocked, and shoved.  Just putting something in a box is fine if it’s a book, but not so good if it’s fine china.

Here at Pak Mail Anderson Mill we understand the rigors of the shipping system and how to protect your treasures.  Depending on the fragility and value of the item we use bubble wrap, foam peanuts, Styrofoam, foam sheets, etc.  Sometimes we double box and sometimes we build a custom crate.

If you’re going to pack yourself, make sure you take into account these two important points – use enough fill material to be sure the items in the box cannot move around and be sure you have enough padding based on fragility.

Now for the bragging part – I knew we had a very, very low claims rate, but now I have a  statistic!  I learned at our Pak Mail Convention in September that our industry overall has a 2% or higher damage rate.  The incredible news is that Pak Mail has a rate that is less than 1/2 of 1%!
